A healthy lifestyle is an essential part of managing PCOS and is recommended as the first step in treatment. This incorporates good nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management and emotional wellbeing.
Research has shown that lifestyle programs, incorporating diet and exercise, with even a small to moderate weight loss (around 5-10% of your weight) can improve the symptoms of PCOS, regulate menstrual cycles and boost fertility. Lifestyle changes will also reduce long-term health risks such as diabetes and heart disease.
Dr Kate Marsh is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and Credentialled Diabetes Educator with extensive experience and understanding in managing PCOS, and can help you to develop a lifestyle plan suited to your individual needs and goals. Kate will help you to set realistic and achievable goals and develop a plan to:
- lose weight or prevent weight gain
- improve symptoms of PCOS including irregular periods, acne and excess hair
- increase fertility and prepare for a healthy pregnancy
- manage your nutrition, weight and blood glucose levels during pregnancy
- manage gestational diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy) including instruction on diet and self blood glucose monitoring
- reduce long-term health risks such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular (heart & blood vessel) disease
Your first consultation will take an hour and will involve an assessment of your current lifestyle habits, PCOS symptoms and health/medical history, as well as a discussion of your goals. This will be used to develop a comprehensive report outlining areas for improvement and suggested lifestyle changes to assist you in managing your PCOS. At your second consultation this report will be used to work with you to develop an individualised lifestyle plan and you will be provided with the information and education you need to implement this plan. Follow-up appointments will be made according to your needs – some women only need a few consultations to learn more about lifestyle and PCOS, while others prefer regular follow-up until they achieve their goals.
Consultation fees are $180 for your initial consultation (1 hour) and $85 for review consultations (1/2 hour).
